Learning Objectives:
1. Identify patient’s stated and unstated goals for genetic testing.
2. Design a genetic testing strategy that meets both patient’s stated and unstated goals.
3. Identify strategies to navigate ethical conflicts regarding personal autonomy, disclosure timelines, and parental authority when managing genetic testing without assent in pediatric populations.
4. Integrate reproductive, disability, and professional ethics frameworks to determine permissible options and offer family-centered counseling.
Chenery Lowe, ScM, CGC, PhD
Chenery Lowe is a genetic counselor, healthcare communication researcher, and postdoctoral scholar at the Girand Center for Biomedical Ethics at Stanford University. Her research focuses on ethical and communication issues with integrating genomic medicine into routine care. She is a cancer genetic counselor and serves as a consultant trainee with the Stanford Health Care and Stanford Children's Health clinical ethics services.
Lauren Puryear, MS, CGC
Lauren is a genetic counselor in the University of Washington adult general genetics clinic and an Assistant Program Director for the UW Genetic Counseling Graduate Program. She graduated from the Stanford University genetic counseling program in 2016. Lauren has a clinical focus on connective tissue conditions, but also enjoys seeing a wide variety of indications in general genetics.
Brittany Sears, PhD, MSPH, LCGC
Brittany Sears, PhD, MSPH, CGC (they/she) is a board-certified genetic counselor, clinical oncology researcher, and President-Elect of the Florida Association of Genetic Counselors. Their previous work spans clinical diagnostics at Ambry Genetics as well as departmental leadership at Tampa General Hospital, where they managed oncology genetics and maintained a clinical caseload of over 600 patients annually. A frequent presenter at national meetings such as the American Society of Breast Surgeons, NSGC, and NCCN, Brittany is dedicated to advancing health equity, data stewardship, and full-scope practice across the profession.
