2024 Janus Lecture - The Sacred Disease: Exploring the Past, Present, and Future of the Epilepsies, presented by Beth Rosen Sheidley

First described 4,000 years ago, epilepsy has inspired a wide range of theories of causation. People with epilepsy continue to experience stigma and discrimination and many lack access to treatment. How has our understanding of the epilepsies changed over time? What impact has the next generation sequencing era had on the diagnosis, treatment, and perception of the epilepsies? This session will address the rapid advances made in epilepsy genetics research over the last decade, highlight the engagement of families and the genetic counseling community in advocacy, and provide a framework for addressing the remaining challenges ahead.
