Digital health literacy plays a role in patient-provider communication, with implications across the healthcare continuum. In this workshop, we will present factors that affect digital health literacy, discuss the impact of online health information on patients, and provide resources that genetic counselors can employ to help patients navigate the traps of online health information

Learning Objectives:
1. Describe how social determinants of health and health literacy may influence how patients access, interpret and use health information.
2. Outline how media coverage affects patient understanding of cancer and medical decision-making.
3. Discuss tips, resources and ways that genetic counselors can help patients understand health media reports and learn about and access supportive services.

The National Society of Genetic Counselors (NSGC) has authorized the National Society of Genetic Counselors (NSGC) to offer up to .13 CEUs or 1.3 Category 1 contact hours for the activity, Digital Health Information: Media Coverage of Cancer and Its Impact on Patients. The American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) will accept CEUs earned by participating in this program for the purposes of genetic counselor recertification.
