Emerging Career Paths for Genetic Counselors

This 60-minute webinar, hosted by the NSGC Student/New Graduate Special Interest Group, explores the expanding landscape of genetic counseling careers beyond traditional clinical roles. While genetic counselors have historically worked in clinical roles, this session highlights the growing presence of professionals in non-clinical settings, including industry, research, education, and entrepreneurship. Through a combination of background context and panel discussions, attendees will gain insight into how skills learned in graduate training may be applied to different career paths.

Featuring speakers currently working in unique, non-clinical roles, the webinar will provide firsthand perspectives on career transitions, day-to-day responsibilities, and the application of core genetic counseling skills, such as communication, risk assessment, and critical thinking, in new professional contexts. Participants will also learn practical strategies for exploring these career paths, including networking, skill development, and positioning themselves for opportunities outside of direct patient care. The session concludes with a live Q&A and curated resources, with an emphasis on making career development more accessible and equitable for all trainees and early-career genetic counselors.
