Gender-Inclusive Genetic Counseling: Education and Skill-building for Clinic, Industry, and Supervision

The goals of this session are to give genetic counselors (GCs) a deeper understanding of a broad scope of topics relevant to care for transgender and gender diverse (TGD) patient populations and to build self-efficacy in providing gender-inclusive counseling to all patients. This interactive session will focus on education and skill-building using a mix of lectures, panel discussions, role plays, and other activities, providing tools to implement these skills into your practice. Speakers will include TGD community members and GCs from a variety of practice settings and specialties. The session will use the PRICE (Policy, Research, Industry, Clinic, Education) model, developed by the Cancer SIG anti-racism subcommittee, to structure the content and ensure that it is relevant to a broad GC audience. The Amplify education modules and workshops, which have been shown to improve GC knowledge and self-efficacy on TGD topics, will also be used as a model for this session.

1. Define sex, gender and other terms relevant to gender-inclusive care.
2. Compare cancer risk management in cisgender and TGD populations.
3. Compare prenatal genetic counseling in cisgender and TGD populations.
4. Apply gender-inclusivity to medical and family historical collection.
5. Summarize policies affecting TGD healthcare access.
6. Identify gaps in research relevant to equitable healthcare for TGD populations.
7. Evaluate lab reports and TRFs for gender-inclusivity.
8. Analyze educational materials for gender-inclusivity.
9. Apply gender-inclusive practices to supervision of TGD students.
10. Highlight examples of the lived experiences of TGD community members.

Genetic Counselor CEUs:

The National Society of Genetic Counselors (NSGC) has authorized the National Society of Genetic Counselors (NSGC) to offer up to .55 CEUs or 5.5 Category 1 contact hours for the activity, Gender-Inclusive Genetic Counseling: Education and Skill-building for Clinic, Industry, and Supervision. The American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) will accept CEUs earned by participating in this program for the purposes of genetic counselor recertification.
